Nepalese soldiers accused in Haiti Cholera Outbreak

The Nepalese peacekeeping mission in Haiti is investigating allegations that its camp could be the source of a cholera outbreak there.

More than 300 people so far have died from the disease in the Caribbean country. Suspicion has fallen on the Nepalese base because the soldiers have only recently arrived there.

Cholera is endemic in Nepal but is very rare in Haiti.

Sarah Jacobs from Save the Children said: “What we’re seeing here is 174 new cases of suspected cholera – we will have the confirmation with the lab tests.

“The really scary thing about this, however, is that it’s a new outbreak.

“The first outbreak has been north of the capital, Port-au-Prince. These new suspected cases are much nearer the capital.”
